PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Participants accepted into INMF's 2024 Summer Program will compose a chamber work to be workshopped and premiered by our Festival Chamber Ensemble or Ensemble-In-Residence.

Composers participate in Lessons, individual Instrumental Workshops, and Evening Lectures online.
AUGUST 2024 (DATES TBD) | LOS ANGELES, CA
Composers are invited to Los Angles to work in-person with the faculty and ensemble, including masterclasses, rehearsal of their composition, and a hands-on conducting workshop. Works will be recorded and premiered as a part of our streaming concert series in the weeks after the festival.

A Los Angeles-based composer and conductor, Dr. Rolle's interdisciplinary approach to composition incorporates psychoacoustics, computer programming, and electronic techniques.

JEFFREY HOLMES
Composition Faculty
Composer of post-spectral, teleological music incorporating elements of mysticism and lyrical expression. Holmes' music has been described as “Music of raw power and vision" by Fanfare Magazine.

ERIC BYERS
Performance Faculty, Cello
Praised as “ideally eloquent” by the Los Angeles Times, cellist Eric Byers captivates audiences as a soloist, chamber musician, and composer, with repertoire spanning J.S. Bach to today’s most innovative composers including Esa-Pekka Salonen, Thomas Adès, Andrew Norman, Caroline Shaw, and Peter Eötvös.

With an international career as a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician, Dr. Aubrun brings exciting and intelligent approach to new music.

More Details (click to expand)CONTENT: This workshop covers the fundamental concepts involved with producing electronic sound, designing computer instruments to perform those sounds, and composing with/ for those computer instruments. Material is divided respectively into three main units, roughly three weeks each: Waveform Manipulation; Performative Technology; and Compositional Structure. Creative projects from the workshop can be submitted to premiere on INMF's Streaming Concert Series. Participants have access to original materials and templates in Max 8 designed for Impulse Workshop, a weekly lab for feedback, questions, and exploring new directions, and office hours with the instructor. REQUIREMENTS: Participants will need to own or have a subscription to Max 8 by Cycling '74. There is a free 30-day trial as well as monthly and annual subscription options available. For participants with a valid academic ID, there is a heavily-reduced price for the "Annual Academic" subscription option. Sessions will be held live online via INMF's Google Meet video conference or Zoom; recordings of each session will be available to participants who aren't able to attend it live. Office Hours are optional and offer an opportunity to address concepts in more depth and go over any questions. Office hours are one-on-one and scheduled by appointment. *Additional times/sections may be added for Impulse Workshops, depending on demand and faculty availability. PAYMENT: No payment is due at the time of registration. Once your spot is confirmed in a workshop, you will receive instructions on payment options. Payment plans may be available for confirmed participants. INSTRUCTOR: The faculty mentor of this workshop is Dr. Brandon J. Rolle. Artistic Director of the Impulse New Music Festival, Dr. Rolle is a composer and conductor with extensive experience researching, teaching, and composing music. Rolle has worked with some of the most important figures in contemporary music, including Pauline Oliveros, Clarence Barlow, and Curtis Roads, and his innovative work draws on psychoacoustics research, electronic music techniques, and computer programming to realize deeply-immersive sound worlds. Rolle lives in Los Angeles where he works as a composer and teaches at the Colburn Conservatory of Music and Chapman University. He holds graduate degrees in music composition from Mills College (MA) and University of California, Santa Barbara (PhD).
